Dr. Fazilet Akdoğan Özdemir'in konuşmasının içeriği aşağıdaki konulara odaklanacaktır:
With their origins going back to the Protestant New England and the prescriptive guidelines of the Puritan leaders of the seventeenth century, self-help books have always been prevalent in the American culture. Despite their transformation through the massive social, political and economic changes in the history of the US, self-help manuals have generally promoted some moral narratives based on the ethics of the religious tradition and the values and principles fostered by capitalism and individualism in the source culture. The genre has also emerged in Turkish mainly through translations, and the early examples of the twentieth-century bestsellers were rendered in Turkish soon after they were published in English. The aim of this paper is to illustrate that the proliferation of the Turkish self-help books has occurred with the "collage" practices of the translators and authors in this field. By conceptualizing translation as "collage," this study not only sheds light on the interrelatedness of translation and indigenous writing in this genre in the target culture, but also reveals the encounter of the two disparate ethical traditions implicated in the text-production strategies of the translators/authors.
